What Is Wellness?

To understand what wellness is it is necessary first to define what wellness is not. Wellness is NOT “well baby checkups” at the pediatrician, PAP smears, mammograms, the annual physical, prostate exams or colon screenings. These are early disease screening examinations and are performed to see if treatment is necessary. Wellness is something completely different.

 

Wellness denotes action and direction. If you think about health as a line with “healthy” at one end and “sick and diseased” at the other end, then HEALTH is where you are at any given moment in time.

Health is where you are at any given time on the health line or continuum, but WELLNESS is about what direction you are moving on the continuum.

 

There are many dimensions of wellness we should be aware of… nutrition, diet, chiropractic, emotional health, toxins and hygiene, spirituality, natural childbirth, breastfeeding, immunity, exercise and stress management. WELLNESS is the active, ongoing and continual improvements in any of these dimensions of your life that move you in a positive direction on the health continuum.
